Kayak-Men: Tales of Greenland's Seal Hunters
F
or those interested in kayaks, native life in the far north or things relating to Greenland, this 2006 special edition of the journal QAJAQ will surely be of interest. It contains the full text of the classic book Kayak-Men: Tales of Greenland's Seal Hunters by Signe Rink which first appeared in the Inuit language of Greenland in 1896. This is the first publication in English. The journal's editor Vernon Doucette remarks that despite the vast literature written about the arctic regions, very little has been written from the native point of view. By contrast, he says, the stories in this book are "by kayakers relating tales of travelling and hunting, of survival and disaster, allowing us to hear from the hunters themselves what life was like for them on the West Coast of Greenland a hundred and fifty years ago."
We have been fortunate enough to obtain a few copies of this special journal. Soft cover, 44 pages, 9 x 11 inches. End-papers printed with detailed maps of the West Coast of Greenland. Also includes recent lines drawing of a West Greenland kayak from the period 1878.
